What is Needle felting?

Needle felting is a simple craft where you use a special barbed needle to tangle wool fibres together and turn them into a solid shape. That’s it: no sewing machine, no glue, no fancy equipment.

You start with soft, fluffy wool (usually “wool roving” or “carded wool”), then repeatedly poke it with a felting needle. The tiny barbs on the needle catch the fibres and pull them into each other. Over time the wool firms up, holds its shape, and you can build anything from a tiny heart to a full character or animal.

What can you make with needle felting?

Needle felting is great because you can keep it as simple or as detailed as you like. In a workshop setting, most people make a small project they can finish and take home. Common beginner projects include:

  • Little animals (foxes, cats, dogs, sheep)
  • Cute characters and mini “kawaii” style figures
  • Hearts, stars, mushrooms, and simple decorations
  • Brooches, keyrings, and small gifts

If you can roll wool into a ball and follow a few steps, you can needle felt.

How does needle felting work?

The process is basically building and shaping in layers:

  1. Start with a base shape (often a tight ball or an egg shape).
  2. Felt it firm by poking evenly all over until it holds together.
  3. Add details by layering different colours of wool on top (ears, cheeks, spots, stripes, eyes).
  4. Refine the shape by felting more in the areas you want to tighten or smooth.

It’s surprisingly satisfying. You can literally see the wool change from fluffy to solid as you go.

Is needle felting easy for beginners?

Yes. It’s one of those crafts that looks impressive, but the basics are very beginner-friendly.A few reasons it’s great for first-timers:

  • No “perfect” required — slightly wonky is part of the charm
  • You can fix mistakes by adding more wool and felting over it
  • It’s relaxing and focused (very “hands busy, brain quiet”)
  • It doesn’t take loads of space and you don’t need lots of tools
Does needle felting hurt?

The honest answer: it can, if you’re not careful. Felting needles are sharp. In our workshop we show you how to hold your work safely, how to angle the needle, and how to use the right surface so you’re not fighting the material. Most people might get the occasional tiny poke (it happens), but with good technique it’s very manageable.

Want to give needle felting a go?

If you’ve been curious, this is your sign. Needle felting is easy to start, satisfying to learn, and you don’t need to be “good at art” to enjoy it.
